Lightphrase · Grammarly alternative

A Grammarly alternative that works in any Windows app

Lightphrase is a Windows desktop utility. Highlight text in Gmail, Slack, Word, or any editable field, press Win+Ctrl+R, and the selection is rewritten where it sits. Grammarly is a checker and overlay that works in many apps. Lightphrase is not a grammar score in the margin — it is select, shortcut, replace in place.

Lightphrase and Grammarly, side by side

How Lightphrase works

  • 1. Highlight the text

Select text in any editable field: Gmail, Slack, Word, Notion, Teams, VS Code, or a browser form. Read-only page text cannot be replaced.

  • 2. Press Win+Ctrl+R

The wheel opens on your pointer. Lightphrase stays in the tray; there is no extra window to find.

  • 3. Sweep to an action

Hold and push toward Retone, Translate, Summarize, Fix Grammar, or Reply, then release. Rewrites replace the selection; Reply copies a response. Past the rim still counts.

  • 4. Rewrites replace; Reply copies

Rewrites replace the selection where it sits; Reply copies a response. Your clipboard is snapshotted before the copy and put back after the paste.

When to pick Grammarly vs Lightphrase

Frequently asked questions

Is Lightphrase a Grammarly alternative for Windows?

Yes, if what you want is a desktop way to rewrite selected text in place. No, if what you want is a grammar score, as-you-type underlines, or a Mac and web checker. Lightphrase is a Windows tray utility: highlight, press Win+Ctrl+R, sweep the wheel. Grammarly is a writing assistant with an overlay and a checker.

Does Lightphrase check grammar as I type?

No. Lightphrase does not underline, and it does not score a document. Fix Grammar is a wheel action: you select the text, run the action, and the selection is replaced. If you need live checking while you type, Grammarly is the better tool.

Does Lightphrase work in any Windows app?

It works in any editable field, including Gmail, Slack, Word, Notion, Teams, VS Code, and browser forms. It copies the selection, generates a replacement, and pastes it back, then restores your clipboard. Read-only page text cannot be replaced. Grammarly's overlay covers many apps, but not every native field.

Is Lightphrase free?

While it is in early access, yes. The first 1,000 accounts get in; after that there is a waitlist. Every account gets 1,000 rewrites a day, resetting every UTC day. Signing in once arms the shortcut. Grammarly has a free checker and paid plans; we do not quote their prices here.

Does Lightphrase work on Mac?

Not yet. Windows is available from the Microsoft Store. macOS and Linux are in development. Grammarly already runs on Mac and on the web. If you need those platforms today, Grammarly is the one that ships there.

Can I use Lightphrase and Grammarly together?

Yes. They do different jobs. Keep Grammarly for as-you-type checking in the browser. Use Lightphrase when you want to rewrite a selection in a Windows app without an overlay.

Rewriting that happens in place, not in another tab.

Lightphrase 0.1.4 is free during early access. Download the Microsoft Store installer for Windows.
